Original 1968 Grateful Dead Jefferson Airplane Carousel Ballroom Handbill CGC 9.4 This Alton Kelley Grateful Dead Original Handbill offers you the same world-famous iconic art that appears on the poster for this run of shows, trading for high dollars in similar states of preservation! The design pokes fun at the D.I.Y. nature of the Carousel. The Carousel Ballroom was a short-lived venture funded and managed by the Dead and Jefferson Airplane. After they lost enough money and realized it was not their game, the space was taken over by Bill Graham and became the Fillmore West. Handbills and postcards are currently one of the hottest segments of the market. Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane performed at the Carousel Ballroom (later Fillmore West) on March 15-17, 1968. The artist, Alton Kelley, devised this clever image using what appears to be a hitchhiker's thumb wrapped in a bandage, thus later acquiring the nickname "Sore Thumb." This handbill has been CGC graded 9.4 and measures approximately 5" x 7", in excellent condition. At this time, the Dead and the Airplane were trying to match Bill Graham at his own game and operate the Carousel Ballroom as a four-band collective, along with Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother & the Holding Company. That experiment didn't last long, as the groups soon learned that Graham knew his stuff, and they were best suited to stick to what they knew how to do best... make music. Don't miss this opportunity to own a piece of rock history with this iconic handbill!
