Aoxomoxoa First Printing Poster of Grateful Dead by Rick Griffin
About the Poster Offered here is a first printing of the infamous Aoxomoxoa poster by Rick Griffin featuring the Grateful Dead on January 24-26, 1969. The only flaws that I can see are: 1) Single miniscule pinhole in upper left hand corner 2) Three miniscule pinholes in upper right hand corner 3) Two miniscule pinholes in lower left hand corner 4) Three miniscule pinholes in lower right hand corner 5) 1 ½” handling mark 3 inches from lower right corner 6) 1” handling mark 7 ¾ inches from lower right cornet Measures approximately 26 ¼” x 21 7/8”. For the first four pinhole flaws, with the naked eye you have to look hard for them to notice. This is one of my favorites; as well as the favorite of many. This poster was used to promote a series of shows at the historic Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco (in the post-Family Dog era). These shows were presented by Soundproof Productions, and featured the Grateful Dead, Sons Of Champlin & Initial Shock. Show dates were January 24-26, 1969. This truly iconic psychedelic image was designed by the late Rick Griffin, and is featured in "The Art Of Rock", plate 2.24. It was also used as cover art for the Dead's "AOXOMOXOA" album. The title of the album is a palindrome created by artist Rick Griffin and lyricist Robert Hunter. According to the audio version of the Rock Scully memoir, Living with the Dead (read by the author and former Dead co-manager himself), the title is pronounced ox oh mox oh ah The words "Grateful Dead" on the front of the album, written in large, flowing capital letters, are an ambigram that can also be read "We Ate The Acid" by covering the lower two-thirds portion of the name "Grateful Dead" combined with the very top third of the title. The artwork around the bottom edge of the album cover depicts several phallic representations Rick Griffin became famous for his psychedelic posters for the Avalon Ballroom and the Fillmore West in San Francisco during the late 60s. Jerry Garcia met him backstage at one of the band’s concerts. The Dead hired Griffin and told him he could design anything he visualized, giving him total artistic freedom. They were confident he’s come up with something they liked based on their love of his posters. According to Ida Griffin, Rick’s wife “the cover for Aoxomoxoa is a surfer’s paradise of sunshine, blue sky and life growing all around. It was during this time in Rick’s life that our second daughter was born. The cryptic skull and crossbones represented life and death in a circle of the sun, paradise, the Garden of Eden and planet Earth awareness. Rick would say the whole design was ‘tribal’. The lettering was based on an old English style that flowed into liquid edges, through the influence that water and the ocean had on Rick’s life”. I have gone through great lengths to insure that my posters have been maintained using only archival materials. I have preserved them on acid free paper mounted by protective corners stored flat in binders. On most of the photos of posters that I will be offering you may notice these corner protectors. Due to the value of this poster, I will ship it secured in a ¼ inch custom cut “wooden sandwich”. This will require two or three days to procure. I know that many sellers roll the posters into a container which is much cheaper but may lead to slight damage of wrinkling and handling issues which, due to my view of these being not only pieces or art but historical offerings, I hesitate to do. GRATEFUL DEAD JERRY GARCIA SIGNED AUTOGRAPH Holiday xmas FRAMED TIE COLLECTION
You are looking at a rare framed and numbered collection of five ties which were all inspired by specific pieces of Jerry Garcia's original artwork. This is a museum piece. This has been displayed in my house and does have a few marks on the gold frame. These collections were originally given to top clothing executives and friends of Jerry upon each new release of a tie series or Collection. In all, there were twelve such "Collections". Twenty numbered displays were produced for each; this piece is #Holiday Edition #AP59 1994. The ties are beautifully displayed in a gold-framed shadow box which measures 28" W x 21" H. Beneath the ties is a brass plaque which reads "J. GARCIA ART IN NECKWEAR Holiday Edition 1994 AP/ 59" Below the plaque is a small white card which has been hand-signed (not silk screened, preprinted or copied) ..yes this is an actual authentic signature by Jerry Garcia. Band Signed Grateful Dead (3 Album Set) Europe '72 *Legit In Person Autographs*
So, you are looking at a Grateful Dead Europe '72 album signed by the band (minus Brent Mydland due to his death AND Vince Welnick, as he was not around when we had it signed) while we attended a Dead show in Atlanta (Omni) in 1991. As a 14 year old teen, I went to the show with my dad and we managed to have this signed as the band left a building and walked to their busses. Went to MANY shows with my dad and can only remember 2 instances where we DIDN'T bring something along to try to have signed (even though it rarely happened) and THIS well worn Europe album is what he brought to this show...records we listened to regularly at home. We were part of a decent sized crowd that had stayed well past the show to try to get a glimpse of the band or interact with them in any way as they prepared to get on their tour busses. As I constantly asked my dad "can we go now" to the point that I had almost worn him down, I heard the crowd (that had actually shrank a bit as more time passed) begin to cheer loudly as they began walking out the double doorway we had all been surrounding. Between my dad VERY loudly yelling and the Dolly Parton shirt I had worn that day, we were lucky enough to get their attention and to have it signed by everyone except Vince who I believe must've came out later or from a different door. As you can see, the album cover and "guts" are in fairly rough shape, as it was already a 20 year old album when we had it signed. But I can't imagine it got much worse during the last 33 years, as it has been hanging in the living room of my family's home in a makeshift frame (Walmart special ?) since we had it signed...until I took it down and out of the frame to take these photos. The records themselves seem to be great and I just slipped each of the 3 into new white paper sleeves. My dad passed away 6 years ago and I never sent it for "certification" for 2 reasons. First, I never intended on selling it and secondly, it's one of only 2 pieces of my autographed music memorabilia collection that I actually witnessed be signed. Now as a 46 year old single disabled man myself, I have an unexpected expense that I need funds to take care of and, while I have ZERO clue what's it's REAL "value" is in its condition, I have a number in mind that I've sworn to not go under. I would love to be able to send this for "certificates of authenticity" myself, but was pretty shocked to that alone would cost a small fortune. I have included pics of everything best that I could, but if there's something specific you'd like to see or anything else I can tell you, don't be afraid to ask. The other 3500 were hand numbered only.All printing plates were destroyed by the artist upon completion. This piece was personally authorized by the Jerome J. The event took place at the Union Ballroom at the University of Utah and was known as the “SDS Ball.” Richard Taylor created this poster, which was later reprinted by Kenvin Lyman. This poster is from the first print run of 300 pieces and it is quite scarce.
